Developing strategic leaders who are the best in the world and the best for the world

Personal message from Professor John Potter

It is my pleasure to welcome you to The Meridian Institute for Strategic Leadership, a ground breaking organisation which will provide a much needed forum for senior leaders in a wide range of areas to address current strategic leadership issues. The Institute has a range of areas of expertise including Corporate Issues, Business Enterprise, Social Enterprise, Defence, Maritime, and other key areas.

The Institute is a joint venture between the University of Plymouth and Greenwich School of Management and as Director I am keen to make the organisation as effective as possible by helping to develop much needed strategic leadership capability for all organisations in the public, private and third sectors.

Many people believe that we have had considerable success in the UK in developing effective team leaders and sustainable organisational cultures to unlock the potential of our people. However, it is at the strategic leadership level that there appears to be a need for more gifted individuals. The Meridian Institute for Strategic Leadership addresses this need by promoting seminars, workshops and leadership development programmes which will enable the United Kingdom to become once again a focal point for excellence in strategic leadership.

We hope to welcome you as a participant in the work of the Institute and look forward to working with you to give this pioneering venture the success that it deserves.

Director of The Institute for Strategic Leadership

Welcome from Professor Wendy Purcell

The University of Plymouth is proud to be the leading co-partner of The Meridian Institute for Strategic Leadership. This exciting new Institute will develop Strategic Leadership capability helping to create and sustain successful organisations.

It is clear that organisations that rely on traditional models of management without considering the importance of strategic leadership are at risk. Without the development of the agility associated with strategic leadership, leading in situations characterised by ambiguity is very difficult and risks organisational failure.

Some of our most trusted and successful global organisations face challenges ahead. These include such things as bankruptcy or government intervention for example. However, governments will not be able to bail out failing organisations as a matter of routine. It is vital therefore that we further develop strategic leadership capability.

The Meridian Institute for Strategic Leadership has been created to address the nature of organisational unpredictability and sustainability through the enhancement of strategic leadership. We are working with leading experts and speakers from both practitioner and academic organisations. The Institute will help leaders to develop the tools and strategies that will enable organisations to flourish in uncertain times.

We are committed to The Meridian Institute for Strategic Leadership knowing that through our collective efforts we will make a real and positive difference to the success of organisations operating nationally and in the global environment.
